भारतीय कठपुतलि जगत

'जहाँ मैं जाती हूँ वहीं चले आते हो...'!

'कठपुतलियाँ' शब्द सुनते हि, मुझे 'चोरी चोरी' फिल्म यह का गाना याद आता है जिसमें राज कपूर और नरगिस हुबहू कठपुतलियों की तरह नाचते हैं। बहुतों ने इस गाने के जरिए पहली बार कठपुतलियों को जाना।

विभिन्न कलाओं का मिश्रण 

कठपुतली कला एक प्राचीन कला है। ईसा पूर्व चौथी शताब्दीमें महाकवि पाणिनी के अष्टाध्यायी ग्रंथ में पुतला नाटक का उल्लेख मिलता है। कठपुतली कला के प्रदर्शन में किसी विषय को लकडी की पुतलियों का उपयोग करके नाटक के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया जाता है अतः संवाद लेखन महत्वपूर्ण है। नाटक के किरदारों के अनुरूप उनकी वेशभूषा होती है। कठपुतलियों के चेहरे मिट्टी या प्लास्टर ऑफ पेरिस से बनें होते हैं और उन्हें किरदारों के अनुरूप सजाया जाता हैं। प्रसंगों के अनुसार नेपथ्य की चित्रकारी होती है। इसतरह कठपुतली कला में गीत, संगीत और नृत्य के साथ साथ नाटक, लेखन, काष्ठकला, मूर्तिकला, चित्रकला, रूपसज्जा आदि विभिन्न कलाओं का मिश्रण होता है।

भारतीय पुतली कला के प्रकार

धागा पुतली: कठपुतली के अलग-अलग अंगों को कुछ इसप्रकार जोड़ा जाता है ताकि प्रत्येक अंग को धागों की सहायता से संचालित किया जा सके अतः धागा पुतलियाँ काफी लचीली होती हैं। राजस्थान, ओडिशा, कर्नाटक, महाराष्ट्र और तमिलनाडु में धागा पुतली कला प्रचलित है।

धागा पुतली 

छाया पुतली: छाया पुतलियाँ चमड़े से बनी होती हैं और चपटी होती हैं। एक परदे को पीछेसे प्रकाशित किया जाता है।परदा और प्रकाश के स्त्रोत के बिच पुतलियों का संचालन होता है। इसतरह पुतलियों की छाया दर्शक परदे पर देख सकते हैं। केरल, तमिलनाडु, आंध्र प्रदेश, कर्नाटक, महाराष्ट्र और ओडिशा में छाया पुतलीयों का प्रचलन हैं।

दस्ताना पुतली: दस्ताना पुतली को दस्ताने की तरह हाथ में पहनकर खेल दिखाते है। अंगूठा और छोटी उंगली से पुतली की भुजाएं और बिच की उंगलियों को सर के स्थान पर रखकर संचालित किया जाता है। दस्ताना पुतली का प्रचलन उत्तर प्रदेश, ओडिशा, पश्चिम बंगाल और केरल में अधिक है।

छड़ पुतली: छड़ पुतली दस्ताना पुतली की हि तरह होती हैं परंतु आकार में बड़ी होती हैं। वे छड़ यानि डंडे पर आधारित होती हैं और उन्हीं से संचालित होती हैं। छड़ पुतलीयों का प्रचलन पश्चिम बंगाल और ओडिसा में है। ओडिसा की छड़ पुतलीयाँ थोड़ी छोटी होती हैं।

विभिन्न प्रांतों में विभिन्न नाम

कठपुतली कला भारत के कई प्रान्तों में है बस हर प्रांत में नाम अलग है। राजस्थान की कठपुतली धागा कठपुतली है। असम का पुतुल नाच धागा और छड़ पुतली का मिलाजुला रूप है। आइये, देखते हैं कठपुतली को किस प्रांत में कौन से नाम से जाना जाता है।

शिक्षा में कठपुतलियों का महत्व 

शुरुआत से ही कठपुतली कला मनोरंजन का साधन रही है। पौराणिक कथाओं तथा अन्य मनोरंजक किस्से-कहानियों का मंचन कठपुतलीयों के द्वारा होता रहा है। आधुनिक युग में कठपुतलियों का उपयोग शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में अत्यंत प्रभावी ढंग से किया जा रहा है। राजस्थान जैसे कुछ राज्योंमें प्राथमिक कक्षाओं में कठपुतलियों का उपयोग करके पाठ्यक्रम पढाया जाता है और इसके लिए शिक्षकों को प्रशिक्षित भी किया जाता है। भ्रष्टाचार, ईमानदारी, अनुशासन, नैतिकता, प्राणियों के प्रति करुणा, वरिष्ठ नागरिकों के लिए सदभाव आदि सामाजिक विषयों को मनोरंजक तरीके से कठपुतलियों द्वारा दर्शाया जाता है। साथ ही शारीरिक और मानसिक रूप से विकलांग बच्चों के विकास के लिए भी कठपुतली कला का सफलतापूर्वक उपयोग किया जा रहा है।

कठपुतली कला का विस्तार 

सतवर्धन काल में कठपुतली कला का विस्तार भारत से लेकर पूर्वी एशिया के देश जैसे इंडोनेशिया, म्यांमार, जावा, सुमात्रा, श्रीलंका, थाईलैंड आदि में हुआ। आजकल कठपुतली कला रशिया, रोमानिया, जर्मनी, जापान, चीन, अमेरिका, चेकोस्लोवाकिया और अन्य कई देशों में प्रचलित है। 

विश्व कठपुतली दिवस

कठपुतली कला की सर्वव्यापी लोकप्रियताको देखते हुए 'विश्व कठपुतली दिवस' मनाने का विचार ईरान के कठपुतली प्रस्तुतकर्ता जावेद जोलपाघरी के मन में आया। उनके प्रयासों से 21मार्च 2003 को फ्रांस में कठपुतली दिवस की शुरूआत हुई। तबसे भारत सहित अन्य कई देशों में 21 मार्च को 'विश्व कठपुतली दिवस' मनाया जाता है

Hearing the words 'Puppets', I remember this song from the movie 'Chori Chori' in which Raj Kapoor and Nargis dance like puppets.  Many of us came to know puppets for the first time through this song.

Blend of different arts

Puppetry is an ancient art.  The effigy drama is mentioned in the Ashtadhyayi Granth of Mahakavi Panini in the fourth century BCE.  In the performance of puppet art, a subject is presented as a play using wooden mannequins, therefore dialogue writing is important. Puppets have costumes to suit the characters of the play.  The faces of the puppets are made of soil or plaster of Paris or paper mashe. The faces are decorated according to the characters. The backgrounds are painted as per the scenes.  Thus puppetry is a combination of various art forms such as song, music, dance, drama, writing, woodwork, painting, make up, costume design etc.

Types of indian puppetry

String puppets: Different parts of a puppet are joined together in such a way that each part can be operated with the help of strings, that's why, string puppets are quite flexible. String puppetry is practiced in Rajasthan, Odisha, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

Shadow puppets: Shadow puppets are made of leather and are flattened.  A screen is illuminated from it's back side.  The effigies operate between the screen and the source of light.  The shadows of the puppets can be seen on the screen.  Shadow puppetry is prevalent in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Odisha.

Glove puppets: The puppetry artist perform wearing glove puppets in hand like a glove.  The puppets  are operated by placing thumb and little finger at the place the puppet's arms and the middle finger in place of the head.  Glove puppetry is more prevalent in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Kerala.

Rod puppets: Rod puppet is similar to glove puppet but is large in size.  They are fixed on rods and are operated with their help.  Rod puppets are prevalent in West Bengal and Odisha.  Odisha's rod puppets are slightly smaller.

Different names in different states

Puppetry is popular in many states of India but the name is different in every state. The 'kathputli' of Rajasthan is a string puppet. The 'putul nach' of Assam is a mixed form of string and rod puppetry. Let us see in which state, which puppet is known by what name.

Importance of puppets in education

Puppetry has been a means of entertainment since the beginning.  Mythology and other entertaining anecdotes have been staged using puppets.  Puppets are being used very effectively in the field of education in the modern era.  In some states like Rajasthan, the syllabus of primary classes is taught using puppets and teachers are also trained for this.  Social subjects like honesty, discipline, morality, compassion for creatures, goodwill for senior citizens, etc.  are amusingly represented by puppets.  Also, puppetry is being successfully used for the development of physically and mentally challenged children.

Expansion of Puppetry 

In the Satwardhan period, puppetry was expanded from India to East Asian countries such as Indonesia, Myanmar, Java, Sumatra, Sri Lanka, Thailand etc. Nowadays puppetry is practiced in Russia, Romania, Germany, Japan, China, America, Czechoslovakia and many other countries.

World puppet day

Given the ubiquitous popularity of puppetry, the idea of ​​celebrating 'World Puppet Day' came to the mind of Javed Jolpaghari, an Iranian puppet presenter. Due to his efforts, celebration of Puppet Day started in France on 21 March 2003.  Since then, 'World Puppet Day' is observed on 21 March in many countries including India.
